Outer and 5 Gyres Partner to Fight Plastic Pollution

1% for the Planet member Outer has diverted over 1.2 million plastic bottles from oceans and landfills. The outdoor furniture company’s founder, Jiake Liu, talks about their priority for sustainability, giving plastic waste a new life and how they chose their nonprofit partner, the 5 Gyres Institute:

“Our mission is to get people outside, and we do this by creating comfortable, durable, and innovative outdoor furniture. We want to do our part to protect the planet so that future generations can enjoy the outdoors as much as we do now. There are 99+ plastic bottles diverted from landfills and oceans in each of our chairs, and our outdoor rugs are made from 100% post-consumer plastics.

Sustainability is a factor in every product Outer makes, starting with the design phase and continuing through every stage of the product’s lifecycle. We ensure that our products are fully recyclable at the end of their long, useful lives. Rather than churning out items that need to be replaced year after year, we believe in producing fewer, better, longer-lasting goods. Our fabrics are free of harsh dyes and chemicals; we formulate colors as we create the fibers, meaning we use less water, dye, and energy overall. In doing so, we also reduce the risk of wastewater leaching into the ground. No chemical run-off here.

Outer’s mission to leave this planet better than we found it has led us to supporting the 5 Gyres Institute, a nonprofit that is working hard to inspire action to fight plastic pollution.

The ever-growing and passionate 5 Gyres team is published in over 25 peer-reviewed scientific journals, papers, and studies on plastic pollution. Their research has successfully changed public policy, evidenced by the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015. In 2016, they created the Plastics BAN (Better Alternatives Now) List (and since have released List 2.0), identifying the world’s most dangerous plastics and suggested alternatives on the market today.

Outer is only at the beginning of our journey, but we know that what matters is that we are always moving forward.
